Indecomposable coverings with unit discs

We disprove the 1980 conjecture of János Pach about the cover-decomposability of open convex sets by showing that the unit disc is not cover-decomposable. In fact, our proof easily generalizes to any set with a smooth boundary. We also show that (the suitable variant of) the conjecture holds for unbounded sets. Let C be a collection of sets in R2. We say that C is an m-fold covering if every po...

Line Transversals to Translates of Unit Discs

Let F be a family of convex figures in the plane. We say that F has property T if there exist a line intersecting every member of F . Also, we say that the family F has property T (k) if every k−membered subfamily of F has property T . In this talk we will give some results concerning families of translates of the unit disc which have property T (3) or T (4).

Math 254a: Minkowski Bounds, and the Unit Theorem

Proof of the theorem. The formula for the discriminant of a polynomial of the form x + ax + b is 5b + 2a. Plugging in a = −1, b = 1, we find that our f(x) has discriminant 2869. This factors as 19 ·151, so it is square-free, so by the proposition from the previous lecture, we find that OK = Z[α]. We now apply Minkowski’s bound to compute the class group. We claim that f(x) has a single real roo...

f-Vectors of Minkowski Additions of Convex Polytopes

The objective of this paper is to present two types of results on Minkowski sums of convex polytopes. The first is about a special class of polytopes called perfectly centered and the combinatorial properties of the Minkowski sum with their own dual. In particular, we have a characterization of faces of the sum in terms of the face lattice of a given perfectly centered polytope. Exact face coun...
